John Glair graduated from the University of Michigan in 1964, and later joined the US Army, based at Fort MacArthur in San Pedro, California. In 1968 he represented the Potomac Boat Club. Glair competed in the 1967 Pan American Games, when canoeing was a demonstration sport, placing first in the C-1 10K and second in the C-1 1,000 metres.
