John Holland competed in whitewater kayak events, and qualified for the 1972 US Olympic team by placing third at the Olympic Trials. In addition to the 1972 Olympics, he raced at the 1969, 1975, and 1977 World Championships, with a best finish of 22nd in K-1 slalom in 1975. Holland graduated from Colby College in 1975 with a degree in biology and geology. He later attended law school at the University of Montana and worked as lawyer in Montana with Martorano Law Corporation.
