Mervil Larson grew up in Southern California but was in the US Army in 1968, stationed at Fort MacArthur in San Pedro, California. He graduated from Huntington Beach High School in 1958. Larson competed at the 1968 Olympics even though he had only one year experience in canoeing at that time.
