Robert O’Brien attended Fairleigh Dickinson University and paddled for the Inwood Canoe Club. In high school he was on the swim team, and when he was in the service, he ran the mile for the 7th Army, 40th AAA Battalion. O’Brien was 1951 US junior champion in K-1. He and Ken Wilson won the US title in K-2 1,000 in 1957. O’Brien worked as a sales rep at the time of the 1960 Olympics.
