John Pickett grew up in Pennsylvania and attended Dallas High School in Dallas, Pennsylvania, near the Pocono Mountains. He competed at the 1967 Pan American Games in three K-1 events, placing third in the 500 and 1,000 metres, and second in the 10K, when canoeing was only a demonstration sport. Pickett competed for the Sebago Canoe Club.
