Rob Plankenhorn attended Indiana University, graduating in 1978 with a degree in finance. Plankenhorn was on the US national team from 1979-84, competing at the 1982 World Championships in C-1 10K. He also made the 1980 US Olympic team that did not compete. He won six national titles in C-1 and C-2 events, competing in C-2 with Andreas Weigand. Plankenhorn later worked at the market surveillance department of the Chicago Board of Trade.
