Dennis Van Valkenburgh attended East Carolina University and paddled for the Washington Canoe Club. He was a student at the time of the 1964 Olympics. He won the 1964 AAU C-1 title, and won the 1965 AAU C-2, alongside Andy Weigand. Van Valkenburgh was also part of the winning boat in the C-4 at the 1961 and 1962 AAU Championships.
