Bret Young attended Manhattan College, graduating in 1982 as a computer systems major. Young competed at the National Sports Festival in 1978, 1981, 1982, and 1983. He qualified for the 1984 Olympic team by having the third highest point total among male canoeists at the US Trials. Young and Bruce Merritt placed ninth in C2-500 at the 1984 Olympics.
