Mongolian judoka Tuvshinbayar Naidangiin won Olympic gold at 100 kg at Beijing 2008 and a silver at the 2012 London Olympics. He was twice a bronze medalist at the World Championships, in the men’s team event in 2015 and in the unlimited class in 2017. He was gold medalist at the 2014 Asian Games at 100 kg and won the 2016 Asian Championship in the same class.
Tuvshinbayar was elected as President of the Mongolian National Olympic Committee in 2020 and served for one year. In April 2021 he was involved in a drunken brawl with a childhood friend, Erdenebilegiin Enkhbat, also a World Tour medalist in judo. Enkhbat was severely injured during the fight and died from his injuries in December 2021.
Tuvshinbayar went to trial for the crime and was convicted in June 2022. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison and paid reparations to Enkhbat’s family of 2.78 billion Mongolian Tugriks (ca $875,000).
