The National Olympic Committee (NOC) for Mongolia was formed on 26 February 1956, which was recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at the 60th IOC Session in Moskva, on 5 June 1962. Mongolia has competed at the Olympic Games since 1964, its only absence being the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, (which it boycotted).
Until the 2008 Olympics, Mongolia was the country that had won the most Olympic medals (15) without winning an Olympic title. But that drought was ended in 2008, Naidangiin Tüvshinbayar (half-heavyweight judo) and Enkhbatyn Badar-Uugan (bantamweight boxing) both won gold medals, leaving the Philippines (10 medals) as the owner of this esoteric Olympic record, although the current holder, as of 2022, is Malaysia with 13 medals.
Through 2022, Mongolia has won 30 Olympic medals and two golds (those of 2008). Tüvshinbayar is the only Mongolian athlete with two medals, as he also won a silver in the same class at London 2012.
Mongolia’s first Winter Olympic appearance was at Innsbruck 1964 and it has since missed only the 1976 Olympic Winter Games, competing 15 times. In 1964, Mongolia showed up in Innsbruck, having failed to enter, but the IOC allowed their skiers and skaters to compete at the last minute.
Through 2022, Mongolia has had Winter Olympians competing in biathlon, cross-country skiing, speed skating, and short-track speed skating. They have not yet won a medal at the Olympic Winter Games, with their best finishes coming in their inaugural appearance, when female speedskater Tsedenjavyn Lkhamjav placed 20th in the 3,000 metres and 24th in the 1,000 metres.
