Paolo Angioni won a gold medal at the 1964 Olympics, winning gold with the Italian eventing team. They had a clear margin of victory over the United States, thanks to the individual scores of the Italians. Angioni finished 11th, Giuseppe Ravano 14th, while Mauro Checcoli won the individual gold. In 1966, Angioni was crushed under his horse in a competition in Poland. He went into a coma, but managed to recover to compete at the 1968 Olympics. Later, he wrote several books on equestrian history and techniques. In honour of his sporting achievements, Paolo Angioni was awarded a Gold Medal by the Italian Olympic Committee.
