John Barry was a career military man who eventually reached the rank of colonel. He was a noted horseman, and was commandant of the Fourth Cavalry Regiment stationed at Fort Meade, then in South Dakota. In addition to his two Olympic riding appearances, he was in charge of organizing the equestrian events at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics.
