German three-day event rider Matthias Baumann won two team medals with the West German team at the 1988 Seoul Olympics (gold) and the re-unified German team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics (bronze). Individually, he finished sixth in 1988 and 34th in 1992. In 1996, he was nominated as a substitute, but did not start. At the 1987 Europeans Baumann added a team silver, and in 1990 another bronze at the Worlds.
Nationally, Baumann won individual titles from 1990-92 as the first German to ever win a hat-trick of titles. By profession, he was a veterinary surgeon and ran his own training and rehabilitation center for sport riding horses at Reichertsheim. Baumann was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany`s highest sports award.
