Dressage rider Michel Bertraneu joined the French national team in the early 1980s and competed at the European Dressage Championships in 1983. Bertraneu’s eighth-place finish in the team event helped to earn him a place on the French team for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. At the Los Angeles Games, however, he failed to finish in both the individual and team events. Bertraneu earned pre-selection for the 1988 Seoul Olympics but ultimately did not compete in South Korea. Two years later he rode at the first edition of the World Equestrian Games in Stockholm, with France finishing in sixth place in the team competition.
Following his competitive career Bertraneu became a dressage trainer working with the French eventing team. He worked with Karim Laghouag for more than six years, with Laghouag going on to win gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics. In 2012 Bertraneu and his wife started their own stables for dressage horses.
