West Germany had won the team dressage gold medal in 1964, 1968, and 1976, but did not compete in 1980. In Los Angeles West Germany again won the gold medal with an enormous margin over Switzerland. This would start a streak among the best in Olympic history for any nation in a single event, and through 2008, West Germany or Unified Germany always won this event – a streak of seven consecutive Olympic titles. West Germany was led in 1984 by Reiner Klimke, who won the individual gold medal.
