Ib Bjørke took up horse riding at the age of 10 and began competing in earnest after joining the Danish military, reaching his peak in the late 1950s. He was runner-up in eventing at the national championships in 1957 and was eventually selected to represent his country in that category at the 1960 Rome Olympics. There, he was 28th individually, but as only one of his teammates, Arne Preben Jensen, completed the event, Denmark was not ranked in the team competition. He later became Secretary General of the Danish Riding Federation, serving from 1984 through 1999. He was married to his wife Lilo for 72 years, with the couple dying only 22 hours apart from one another.
