Judith Chacón’s top international result had been her 9th place at the 2008 Olympics. A year earlier, she had placed 14th in the 53 kg class at the World Championships, and fourth at the Pan American Championships. A computer science student, she had briefly retired from weightlifting because of pregnancy. She became infected, however, and after weeks of illness, she succumbed aged only 23. Doctors managed to save Chacón’s daughter.
