A son of farmers, Henri Chammartin graduated from the Field-Artillery Recruit School in Thun. From 1949 until his retirement Chammartin was employed by the Swiss Federal Military Horse Training Center in Bern. Exclusively a dressage rider, Chammartin competed at five consecutive Olympics starting in 1952 and won individual gold in 1964, team silvers in 1952 and 1964 and team bronzes in 1956 and 1968. He also won a team dressage silver at the 1966 World Championships. At the European Championships in dressage, he won individual gold in 1963 and 1965, team silver in 1965, individual bronze in 1963, while riding two different horses, and team bronze in 1967.
