As in 1960 there was a preliminary round with riders advancing to a final round, although six riders advanced in 1964 as opposed to five in 1960. The final score of the top six consisted of their total score in both rounds. German Harry Boldt led the qualifying quite comfortably over Swiss Henri Chammartin. In the final round, defending gold medalist Sergey Filatov (URS) but Chammartin was close behind and his combined score brought him the gold medal by only one point over Boldt, who placed only fourth in the final round. Filatov’s final round brought him to the bronze medal. The silver and bronze medalists from Roma, Gustav Fischer and Josef Neckermann, placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
