Jerzy Dzięcioł was born in Poland and competed in sailing at the 1936 Olympics, although until recently his participation was not well-known. He competed only in the sixth and seventh races of the one-person dinghy event, replacing Leon Jensz, who had sailed in the first five races. Dzięcioł served as a Captain in the Polish Army during World War II, and was a Chief Commander of Intelligence while serving in London, the Balkans, and the Middle East. He was given multiple medals from both the British and Polish armies. Dzięcioł later settled in British Columbia, Canada, where he worked as a civil engineer and land surveyor. His many projects included the construction of bridges, roadways, airports, and housing developments both in the US and Canada.
