Regarded as the father of Hong Kong sport, Arnaldo de Oliveira Sales helped to co-found the Hong Kong Olympic Committee and later served as the organisation’s President. Of Portuguese heritage, Sales was born in Guangzhou before moving to Hong Kong when he was eight. In addition to co-founding the Olympic Committee, he served as its President from 1967 to 1998, also serving as the President of the Commonwealth Games Federation from 1994 to 1998. Away from sports he was also a member of the Urban Council, a municipal council in Hong Kong. Sales was awarded with the Olympic Order in Silver in 1982. He died in March 2020 at the age of 100.
