Robert Smith was President of the International Baseball Federation (IBAF) from 1981-93. For his work in baseball administration, he received the Olympic Order in Silver. Smith was a graduate of Greenville College in Illinois in 1957 and then became a physical education instructor and baseball coach at the college. He later became a development officer of Greenville College, then was vice-president for Institutional Advancement, and eventually was named as the ninth President of Greenville College, serving in that role from 1993-98.
Smith was elected President of the United States Baseball Federation in 1980, serving in that post until 1989. During his Presidency of the IBAF Smith coordinated 26 world baseball tournaments and directed the baseball tournaments at the 1984, 1988, and 1992 Olympic Games. He is often credited with bringing baseball onto the Olympic Programme.
