Arlington Butler became President of the Bahamas Olympic Association in 1973 and served in that role for over 35 years. He was also President of the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations from 1964-68. Educated at the Bahamas Teachers College, the University of Nottingham, and Longborough Training College, Butler was a lawyer by training but had a long and distinguished career in government and politics. He was a former speaker of the Bahamian House of Assembly from 1972-77 and served as the Bahamas ambassador to the United States. He was a minister in the Cabinet of Hubert Ingraham.
Butler received the Olympic Order in Silver in 1993 and was knighted in 1996 by Queen Elizabeth II. In 2014 he received the Pierre de Coubertin Award from the International Olympic Committee, and that year became the inaugural recipient of the Bahamas Olympic Committee President’s Award.
