Yury Bychkov began coaching immediately after graduating from the Omsk Institute of Physical Culture in 1962. From 1974-77 he was head coach of the Iranian fencing team. Bychkov coached the Russian fencing team at the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games.
From 1992 to 2000 Bychkov was President of the Russian Fencing Federation, and then served as Vice-President of the Federation. He was later Chairman of the FIE Legal Commission. From 1998 he was head of the Fencing Department of the Russian State University of Physical Culture, Sports, Youth and Tourism. Bychkov was the author of more than 30 scientific papers on fencing teaching methods.
