Cecil Edgar Martindale had lengthy careers in both the military and in sports administration. Martindale began his military career in 1948 when he joined the British Guiana Volunteer Force. He worked his way through the ranks to become a colonel in 1976, earning multiple awards for his service. He was also very enthusiastic about sport, being involved in the early development of field hockey in Guyana. Martindale served as the President of multiple sporting bodies including the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, the Guyana Football Federation, and the Guyana Olympic Association. He later lived in Canada where he was a member of the Guyana Ex-Soldiers of Canada, representing the organisation right up to when he died in Toronto in February 2019.
