Canada first appeared officially at the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis. However, back in 1900, four Canadian citizens had competed in track & field athletics, titularly under USA colors. Since 1900, Canada has failed to be represented only at the 1980 Moskva Olympic Games.
Swimmer Penny Oleksiak leads the total Summer medal table, with a total of seven medals (one gold, two silver, four bronze). She is followed by runner Andre De Grasse, with six medals in total and one gold. Two Canadian rowers have won three gold medals each: together, Kathleen Heddle and Marnie McBean won gold in 1992 coxless pairs, in 1992 eights, and in 1996 double sculls (both also winning a bronze in the 1996 quadruple sculls event).
Canada has appeared at every Olympic Winter Games since their inception in 1924, and, in addition, its ice hockey team competed in the 1920 hockey tournament, winning decisively. This began a trend that continued until the Soviet Union entered the Olympic ice hockey tournaments, starting in 1956.
Canada has won 222 medals at the Olympic Winter Games, with 76 golds (or 223 and 77, if we include 1920 ice hockey). Speedskaters Cindy Klassen and Charles Hamelin have won the most medals of any Canadian Olympians, with six each. Clara Hughes has also won six Olympic medals, competing at both the Summer and Winter Olympics. Hughes won two medals in cycling in 1996 and four medals in speedskating in 2002, 2006, and 2010. Besides Charles Hamelin, three female Canadian ice hockey players have also won four gold medals: Jayna Hefford, Hayley Wickenheiser, and Caroline Ouellette, whose teams won from 2002-2014.
Although Canada has been dominant in ice hockey, their best sports at the Olympic Winter Games, in terms of medals won, have been speedskating (42 medals and 10 gold), short-track speedskating (37 and 10), figure skating (29 and 6), freestyle skiing (30 and 12), and then ice hockey (23 and 14). Canada won its most medals at the Olympic Winter Games at PyeongChang 2018, with 29. It won the most gold medals on its home turf at Vancouver 2010, with 14.
Canada has also hosted the Games of the XXIst Olympiad in Montréal in 1976, the 15th Olympic Winter Games in Calgary in 1988, and the 21st Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver in 2010.
