Biography

Born in Oxford, England in 1932, Grant Spaeth learned to play golf in Montevideo, Uruguay, where his father was working. From there Spaeth then moved with his family to Palo Alto, California and worked as a caddie for members of the golf team at Stanford University. A keen golfer himself, he played for Stanford, helping them to win the 1953 NCAA title. After graduating from Stanford and Harvard Law School he had a brief spell in the US Army before establishing his own law practice in Palo Alto.

During the 1980s Spaeth was key in creating the US Mid-Amateur and Women’s Mid-Amateur tournaments. He served as President of the US Golf Association from 1990-1991. From 1990 to 1992 he served as the President of the International Golf Federation where he confronted the issue of segregation at golf clubs, leading to significant policy changes. Spaeth was inducted into the Northern California Golf Association Hall of Fame in 2011.
