During the 1920s Walter Newton was one of the top amateur boxing prospects in Canada and competed out of the St. Helena Boxing Club of Toronto, Ontario. After successfully capturing the Olympic trials he represented his country in the featherweight division at the 1920 Summer Olympics, where he received a bye in the first round, but lost by decision against Nick Clausen in his first bout. The following year he was the Canadian amateur featherweight and lightweight champion prior to moving to Chicago, Illinois in 1922 to fight for the Illinois Boxing Club. He continued to compete until the 1930s, at which point he took up the role of instructor at his club, a position that he held until his death in October of 1945.
