Charles was the 5th Baron Marion, coming from a family of military officers. He was appointed general in 1942 and served as a prefect for the French Vichy government. After liberation during World War II he was imprisoned in 1944 and sentenced to death by a court martial. From there he was kidnapped and executed by fighters of the French resistance group FTP as a representative of the hated Vichy regime. Marion won both his individual silver medals in the dressage in 1928 and in 1932 with his horse Linon and in 1932 was a member of the victorious French team after placing fourth in 1928.
