Team dressage had never before been contested as an Olympic event, as it was making its début in Amsterdam. The event consisted of eight teams of three riders each, with all three scores to count towards the team total. Germany won the gold medal fairly easily, well ahead of Sweden, which also had a clear margin over the bronze medalists, the Netherlands. The bronze medal was a close competition, with the Netherlands narrowly edging out France.
