Born in Brighton, England in 1909, Ernie Gates later moved to Canada where he represented the Capital Bicycle Club in Ottawa. In 1932 Gates was selected to compete at the Los Angeles Olympics in the road cycling events. During the individual road race, however, he suffered a puncture and failed to finish the course. His non-finish did not contribute to Canada’s overall team placement, with them finishing seventh out of eight teams.
