The son of German aristocrats, Henry Stewart Treviranus went through many names during his life, but he was born as Hans-Heinrich. His father was Gottfried Reinhold Treviranus, a Scottish-German World War I Uboat Commander and later conservative politician in the Weimar Republic. The family fell out of favor as Adolf Hitler came to power and fled to Switzerland in 1934, eventually moving to England and, in 1943, Canada. Henry Stewart served during World War II as captain with the Royal Scots Greys and returned to England after the conflict, where he earned a degree in art history and chemistry from the University of Manchester. Returning to Canada, he represented that country in equestrian at the 1952 Summer Olympics, finishing 22nd among 59 competitors in the individual three-day event and also competing in the team version alongside Larry McGuinness and Tom Gayford.
Before and after his Olympic experience, Treviranus continued studying and working as a painting conservator in Canada and the United States. He eventually settled permanently in Washington D.C., where he maintained a private practice for over four decades and served his profession in several international capacities. He also remained involved with equestrianism, working closely with the sport at the national level in the United States and co-founding the United States Combined Training Association for Equestrian Eventing. He had three daughters, all of whom were involved in horse riding at some level, and he died in a Virginia retirement home in 2008.
