József Varró began his equestrian career as a horse groom at the age of 14 and from then on, he never deviated from his chosen equestrian life. He reached the competition level in a very short time. In May 1959 he got into the saddle at a regional competition, and in 1959 he competed at the national youth championship.
In 1960 Varró transferred to the Újpesti Dózsa team. In 1965, he finished 17th at the European Show Jumping Championship held in Aachen, Germany. Varr competed primarily in show jumping, but he participated in eventing at the 1972 München Olympics. In 1980 he achieved fourth place in team show jumping at the Moskva Olympics. He was Hungarian champion five times individually and five times with the team. In 1995 he came first in show jumping at the Military World Games in Italy. He won the Volvo World Cup series in 1996, was second in the Central European League in 1997, and then qualified for the final in Göteborg.
Even after retiring from elite sports, Varró did not abandon equestrian sports, working as a trainer for decades.
