Only six teams were entered, none of them among the best in the world in show jumping. Four-person teams rode two rounds with the best three scores in each round to count towards the team score. The Soviet Union had the best score in both rounds to win the gold medal easily, with Poland taking silver and Mexico the bronze. One interesting note is that with five of the six nations coming from the Soviet Bloc, only one woman competed in this event, Romanian Dania Popescu. At the Rotterdam Show Jumping Festival, held for nations not competing in Moskva, 13 teams competed, as Canada won the title, followed by Great Britain and Austria. Ten time Olympian Ian Millar was a member of the winning Canadian team.
