Captain Marten von Barnekow was a show jumper who won the gold medal with the German team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and finished equal 16th in the individual competition with 20.00 points. In 1929 and 1932 he won the German Spring Derby in Hamburg. In 1934 he became a member of the SS, but a year later moved to the cavalry school of Hannover and the Wehrmacht. He left the SS but re-joined in 1938 as Sturmbannführer and moved to SS Riding School in München.
