René Defert was a tennis player who represented the Racing Club de France. He lost his only Olympic match in 1896 men’s singles to Demetrius Casdagli. Defert served as secretary of the lawn tennis section of Racing Club de France. He tragically died only a few months after his Olympic appearance, in September 1896, due to accidental poisoning while on vacation in Auxerre. At his death he was close to finishing his degree in physical sciences.
