Biography

Franklin Wing graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point in 1930 and then joined the 7th Cavalry, where he played polo and was on the Army equestrian team. He was selected for the 1940 Olympics, which were never held. In World War II he served in the Pacific Theatre, commanding the 1st Cavalry Division’s dismounted 5th Cavalry Regiment, and earning a Silver Star during the liberation of Manila in the Philippines. Wing retired from the Army in 1960, and in 1961 became executive vice-president and treasurer of the US Equestrian Team (USET). In 1965 he stepped down but served on the USET Board of Directors until 1975 and was on their National Advisory Council until 1983.
