In 1927 Jean Alfonsetti became the amateur road cycling champion of Luxembourg before finishing third in the race a year later. These performances earned Alfonsetti a place on the Olympic team for the 1928 Amsterdam Games. There he finished 42nd in the individual road race, more than one hour behind the winning time, and 10th in the combined team event.
