Colombian welterweight boxer Carlos Mejía competed at the 1976 Montréal Olympics but lost his opening bout to Carlos Santos of Puerto Rico by decision. Despite the defeat Mejía turned professional the following year where he won his first seven fights. His biggest win came in May 1980 when he won the vacant Colombian welterweight title with victory against Rafael Piamonte in Bogotá. Mejía retired in October 1982 with a professional record of 21 fights, with 12 wins, including 8 by knockout. Tragically he was killed in March 2020 in an altercation when two thieves tried to steal his mobile phone.
