Birger Andreassen was born and lived in Kristiania (now Oslo). He first worked as an assistant for a petroleum company and later for Norges Bank. He was married to seamstress Alfhild Helene Schou Nilsen.
At the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, he placed 14th in the individual road time trial, the best result of the Norwegian riders. Norway was not counted for the team event, as only three of the required four members finished the race.
