Nikolay Bobarenko was a Russian road cyclist who was a five-time champion of the USSR. In 1952 Bobarenko was selected to compete in the individual road race at the Helsinki Olympics but was disqualified after falling more than a lap behind the leaders. The Soviet authorities were not impressed by his performance at the Games, resulting in him being stripped of his title of Master of Sports of the USSR. In 1960, however, his title was restored after he continued to compete in multiple races.
After his competitive career Bobarenko became a noted cycling coach, with both a local youth sports school and the Soviet national road team. For his work in coaching he was honoured with the Veteran of Labour medal and the badge for Excellent in Physical Culture and Sports. Following his death in 1996 cyclo-cross competitions were held annually in the city of Yekaterinburg.
