John Becht rode initially for the New England Wheelmen. In August 1911 he set a US record for the marathon distance on a ride to Floral Park, Long Island, finishing off scratch in 1-10:53.4, although he finished only third in the handicap race. Becht was also third at the 1912 US Olympic Trials, by then representing the Empire City Wheelmen.
