Austrian cyclist Walter Bortel did not finish the road race at either the 1952 Helsinki or the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Consequently, the Austrian teams also stayed unplaced. In Helsinki he also eliminated in the qualification round of the 4,000 metres team pursuit, and in the second round of the 2,000 metres tandem event, partnering Kurt Nemetz.
In Melbourne, Bortel was also eliminated in the qualification round of the 4,000 metres team pursuit. Th following year he won the Austrian national 25 km point race title.
