Lisa Fernandez won three gold medals in softball at the 1996, 2000, and 2004 Olympic Games. A pitcher, Fernandez also won two World Championship gold medals and three gold medals at the Pan American Games, in 1991, 1999, and 2003.
Fernandez had Cuban and Puerto Rican heritage but was raised in California. She attended UCLA, graduating in 1995, and helping them win two NCAA titles. She won three Honda Awards as the nation’s top collegiate softball player and in 1995 won the Honda Broderick Award given to the top female collegiate athlete, in any sport. Fernandez and her husband and family settled in Southern California where she has served as an assistant coach for UCLA. Fernandez is a member of the USA Softball Hall of Fame.
