Butler raced at the 1967 Pan American Games, placing 17th in the road race. He was also second in the road race at the 1967 US Championships. He twice competed in the Tour of Mexico.
Butler lived less than two years after his Olympic appearance, as he was killed in a hiking accident in 1970. He was a member of the Sierra Club and an experienced hiker, but on that day he was leading a group of Boy Scouts near Clovis in the Sierra National Forest. He had gone ahead of the group and fell down an embankment while trying to get a drink of water. Butler was found the next day with a broken neck.
