Brian Chewter took up cycling at the age of 13 and, by the age of 16, was a member of the Canadian national cycling team. The highlight of his career was his appearance at two editions of the Olympic Games. In 1972 in Munich, he was 52nd in the road race and 23rd in the 100 kilometers team time trial, alongside Gilles Durand, Jack McCullough, and Tom Morris. Four years later, in Montreal, Chewter and Morris teamed up with Marc Blouin and Serge Proulx to come 16th in the 100 kilometers, while Chetwer failed to finish the road race. A student at McMaster University, he quit cycling shortly after the Montreal Games and spent the next two decades in the family plastering business. He later started his own bike shop, Central Cycle, in his native Hamilton.
