C. V. Clark first made a name for himself in 1905, winning handicap half- and one-mile races. One of his biggest wins of his first season was in capturing the one-mile Dewar Cup at Richmond. He retained the Dewar in 1906 and also won the NCU London Centre tandem title with W. C. LeGrys. At the same meeting, Clark finished fourth in the NCU 25-mile motor paced race behind crack riders David Robertson, Leon Meredith and Bert Bouffler. Clark won the 10-mile race in the three-cornered match between the Putney, Polytechnic and Paddington clubs, when over 240 crack cyclists from the Capital took part. Clark beat Frederick Hamlin and Bert Bouffler to win the Cup. Three days later, Clark travelled to Dublin and lost by six inches to Joe Lavery in the final of the Irish Championships quarter-mile race. To round off a memorable year in 1907, Clark thought he had won the Dewar Cup outright when he crossed the line first, only to find out his winning time of 3:03.2s was outside the time limit and the race was declared void. He warmed up for the 1908 Olympics by winning the five-mile race for the 100 Guineas Challenge Cup at the Plymouth Argyle AC meeting for the third consecutive year. After the Olympics, Clark’s best result was in winning the 1910 NCU London Centre 10-mile title at Canning Town.
