After the end of the war Luis Ángel de los Santos became one of the leading figures of cycling in Uruguay during the 1950s. In 1948 Santos won the first and third stages of the Vuelta del Uruguay, before finishing second overall in the general classification. Later that same year he was part of the quartet that finished fourth at the London Olympics in the 4,000 metres team pursuit. Over the next few years he continued his good form at the Vuelta del Uruguay, including winning six stages and finishing third overall in 1951, followed by fourth overall a year later.
In 1952 Santos returned to the Olympics where he competed on both the road and track at the Helsinki Games. He finished 38th in the individual road race in a small group of riders who were more than 16 minutes behind the race winner. In the velodrome he placed 12th in the 4,000 metres team pursuit and 19th in the 1,000 metres individual time trial. After a brief retirement, Santos returned to the track in Uruguay, winning the 1959 edition of the Six Days of Montevideo with his partner Antonio Alexandre.
