After the end of World War II Belgian cyclist Roger De Pauw had a sporting career that lasted just a few years. In 1948 De Pauw earned a place on the Belgian Olympic team to compete at the London Olympics. Along with compatriot Louis Van Schil, he tied for fifth place in the 2,000 metres tandem sprint after losing his quarter-final heat. In 1952 he had success on the road when he won a race that started and finished in Wilrijk, before finishing third in a Madison race on the track in 1953. In 2016 De Pauw was honoured at a local exhibition in Wilrijk that featured seven athletes from the district who had competed at the Olympics. He was 99-years-old when he died in August 2020.
