As an amateur cyclist François De Wagheneire won two stages of the Tour of Belgium in 1956 to earn himself a place on the Olympic team. De Wagheneire competed on both the road and track at the Melbourne Games, finishing seventh in the team road race and tying for fifth in the 4,000 metres team pursuit. As a track specialist he won two national titles in the Madison, the first with José Denoyette in 1958, followed by another win one year later with Hugo Verlinden.
